17 August 2009 - Prepared, not Scared!
Amid the panic and fears that
the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus is going to cause havoc in schools,
Laerskool Elspark is keeping a calm head about things! With this new
flu virus spreading at such a speed, it seems inevitable that
somewhere, some time, it will strike every school in one way or
another. When that happens, the learners and parents of Laerskool
Elspark can stay calm, because over the past few weeks, the school
has gone to great lengths to educate and inform them on all aspects
of the disease. They have even provided medical masks for those
parents who want some added protection for their little ones.
The principal of Laerskool Elspark, Mr. Philip Brand, has warned
against unnecessary panic and staying at home for fear of the
disease. “We have put all the preventative measures in place”,
he explained. “Parents have been well informed of symptoms and
after care, if a child or his immediate family should get infected,
I will be notified immediately so we can take steps to contain
it,” he said. “Our teachers are also on the lookout for any
symptoms that are not heeded at home.”
The school has put an emphasis on general hygiene and cleanliness
and classrooms are kept well ventilated. Learners have all been
taught general cough hygiene and must have hanky chiefs or tissues
with them at all times. On their website www.laerskoolelspark.co.za
they have a special focus on swine flu with all the information
needed to help the parents look out for symptoms, preventative and
aftercare measures, to prevent unnecessary panic, because though
this is a new virus, it is curable.

9 June 2009 - Laerskool
Elspark’s parents get voting!
The parents of
Laerskool Elspark are supportive and involved in their children’s
school!
The month of June
has seen many schools try hard to get a quorum of parents in voting
for their parent governing body. Most have not been able to achieve
that goal. On the freezing cold evening of 9
June 2009, Laerskool Elspark’s parents proudly supported their
school by, not only reaching quorum, but passing it with 268
parents. With the school hall packed to capacity, parents even
waited in the foyer for a chance to see and choose their favourite
candidates.
Laerskool
Elspark’s governing body consists of 6 parents, elected on 9 June,
3 elected teaching staff, 1 elected administration staff and the
headmaster.
The headmaster Mr.
Philip Brand thanked the parents for their support and care saying
that there are few schools who reach quorum nowadays, and that
surpassing it with such a margin just may be a district record.
The school children
were also duly rewarded on Friday, 12 June, with a McDonalds Burger
and a movie, for their role in getting their parents to attend the
board election on that ice cold Tuesday evening!

their news and lots of foto’s at www.laerskoolelspark.co.za
